Herbs

Herbs at Smithy Green:

· Thyme
Thyme has a very strong flavour. It can be used with meat. If you wanted to see fairies in the Middle Ages thyme was a vital ingredient of the potion. Bees and butterflies love it.

· Rosemary
Rosemary is wonderful with lamb and also with pork and poultry. Rosemary is very good for improving the memory.

· Mint
There are lots of types of mint such as apple and spearmint. It is nice with lamb, peas and makes a nice mint tea. It can be rubbed into the skin to keep away insects.

· Lemon Balm
It can be used with fish and chicken, and to make pot-pourri. It is supposed to be good for the heart, memory and raising spirits.

· Sage
Sage makes a good sage and onion stuffing. Sage is supposed to make you live longer.

All these herbs like full sun and are lovely on a hot summer's day.

Wildlife in our River
We have found a variety of wildlife in the river Wiske. Some of the forms of life we have found are: fresh water oysters, water snails, Sticklebacks, Moorhens, leeches, Herons, And other types of fish that we have not recognized.

We need to keep our river clean as the wildlife does not benefit from bikes and skate boards being dumped in it.

Mrs Evans has kindly agreed to let her pupils plant 5 packets of wild flower seeds this year at Appleton Wiske school, so look out for a colourful display this summer!
