Yorkshire in Bloom 2007 - Spring Judging Comments
We now have the comments from Spring Judging. The full judges’ comments are on the village noticeboard, but here are some highlights.

"A guided tour of Appleton Wiske on a sunny spring morning was a delight. The immediate impression is of a tidy, well cared for village. Appleton in Bloom gave an enthusiastic reception, followed by a well thought out explanatory itinerary that highlighted the involvement of so many villagers, both young and not so young. Several stops were made to meet and talk to the Junior Bloomers and other children. The abundance of grass was cut to a high standard. The judges were particularly impressed by:

· The excellent approaches and villages signs
· The obvious long-term involvement of so many villagers
· The maintenance of green spaces, by rota, to a high standard
· The good focal points such as St Mary’s Church, Millennium Trough and the Triangle bed
· School’s wildlife corner, riverside walk and extended wildflower area
· Water conservation and the expansion of the mini-recycling facility
· Overall cleanliness, free of litter, dog fouling and graffiti
· Professionalism of newsletters, particularly the Junior Bloomers newsletter
· The varying successful means of attracting funding.

Summer Judging
Summer Judging will take place at 2pm on Monday 9th July. Having received such great comments from Michael and Lovaine Irving above, we think that we are in an excellent position to win another Gold and also win Best Village. But, as ever, we need everyone to pull together an make the Appleton Wiske look superb - let's show the judges that we really are the best village in Yorkshire!

Tub Sponsorship
Sponsorship has been a little slow this year, probably because we asked too early in the season. As you can see, the tubs and troughs have now been planted up for summer, so if you would like to sponsor one, please let Tricia have your donations. The up to date list is overleaf.

More Help Wanted
Finally, we are always looking for more helpers as you know, but this year in particular we need one or more volunteers to keep three of the Village Entrances tidy – those on the Picton Road, Rounton Road and Welbury Road. This involves strimming and mowing around the “Appleton Wiske” signs and takes about one hour for the Picton/Rounton signs and one hour for the Welbury sign every 2 weeks. Please contact Simon if you can spare this time – at least until judging day, but preferably until September.

We also need a couple of people to water these beds, one for Picton/Rounton Road and one for Welbury Road signs – there is local water available for the former and water at the Village Hall for the latter.
