As well as the annual show of flowers Britain in Bloom encourages long term planning and planting for the future. The floral displays are complemented by trees, shrubs and perennial planting.

For several years, the Appleton in Bloom Group have been planting and developing any small area of spare ground which can be cultivated. This has resulted in a number of uncared for areas being turned into havens of colour. There has also been a programme of planting trees on the Village Green and at the Recreation Field.
