The Environment and Sustainable Development

Environmental issues and Local Agenda 21 feature strongly within the Appleton in Bloom Group.

What is Agenda 21?

Wildflower Area
The wildflower area which was started in 2003 has recently been extended.

School Pond
The Group have also been instrumental in bringing the School Pond back to life.

Carbon Reduction
5 Oak Trees have been planted on the Recreation Field to the south of the village, two of them along the banks of the River Wiske. They complement the two Black Poplars that were planted 3 years ago.

Living Churchyard
St Mary's churchyard has been transformed by creating a “Living Churchyard” project. Visit the St Mary's web page.

Recycling
The village supports the promotion of recycling by home composting and water conservation.

Wildlife
Wildlife is encouraged by the installation of bird and bat boxes and insect nests.

Biodiversity
In 2005 Appleton in Bloom planted two Black Poplars in support of the Hambleton Biodiversity Action Plan.
